When surfers come out on the beach after enjoying surfing, they smile with joy of being at one with nature and look absent-minded as if they are stoned.
It makes me think that surfing was originally started by shamans when praying god.
Ogasawara Island itself, blessed by nature as it is, seems to be the place to lift your sprits and make you come alive.
City living restricts human instincts, The development of civilization basically makes for the separation of human life and a harsh natural environment; and even many of those who don't live in the big city go to supermakets and buy packets of sliced fish and meets everyday. Few people care about the lives those animals lived - where they came from and how they lived.
Shoppers, in their daily lives, only care about whether those packaged goods contain fresh food or not.
People who keep regular hours in air-conditioned rooms wake up and go to bed punctually to go to school and office every day but they do not really care about the sunrise or sunset.
But when you are in Ogasawara, as long as it is fine, you can easily see the special sunset as it changes day by day. When you gaze at the sunset, you might feel listless, and it gently tells you how tiny we human beings really are.
I could say, 'Return to nature!' But at the same time I understand this is an impracticable idea that we all live in the mountain or by the sea. To tell the truth, as a single man living in the city, I become anxious when I get to a place without a convenience store. Maybe because, in my city existence, I stop by at least once a day, even if I have nothing to buy. When staying on the island, I sometimes missed the stores bathed in fluorescent lights. In the end, I want to Ogasawara frequently to check to see if I still have my five senses, and even a sixth sense, by immersing myself in the blessings of nature.
But even as I say this, today I'm eating a packed lunch with preservatives once again.
